
DESCRIPTION
Titanium Grade 3, UNS R50550, is a commercially pure, unalloyed titanium grade that provides higher strength than Titanium Grades 1 and 2 while maintaining good ductility, weldability and corrosion resistance. Grade 3 is a medium-strength commercially pure titanium grade used when greater load-bearing capability is required without moving to an alloyed titanium grade. It offers excellent resistance in many oxidizing, neutral and mildly reducing environments, including seawater, chlorides, chemical processing media and marine atmospheres.

Chemical processing equipment, heat exchangers, condenser tubing and plates, marine components, desalination equipment, reactor vessels, pressure vessels, piping systems, tanks, aerospace and airframe components, cryogenic vessels, medical components and lightweight fabricated parts requiring higher strength than Grade 2.
PROCESSING
Titanium Grade 3 is typically supplied in the annealed condition for sheet, strip and plate. It is not hardenable by heat treatment, but it can be strengthened by cold work. Annealing may be used after forming or cold working to restore ductility, improve dimensional stability and reduce residual stresses.
FORMING
Grade 3 has good formability, but it is stronger and less formable than Titanium Grades 1 and 2. Higher forming forces may be required, and intermediate annealing may be useful for more severe cold forming operations. It can be bent, roll formed, stamped and drawn when proper tooling and forming practices are used.
WELDING
Titanium Grade 3 is readily weldable by standard titanium welding processes when proper inert gas shielding is used. Weld areas must be protected from oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen contamination at elevated temperatures to maintain ductility, corrosion resistance and clean weld quality.
CORROSION
Grade 3 titanium forms a stable, adherent titanium oxide film that provides excellent resistance to seawater, chlorides, oxidizing acids, alkaline environments and many industrial chemical services. Its combination of corrosion resistance, low density and higher strength makes it useful for marine, chemical processing, aerospace and heat transfer applications.
