DESCRIPTION
Titanium Grade 1, UNS R50250, is a commercially pure, unalloyed titanium grade known for the highest ductility and cold formability of the commercially pure titanium grades. It offers excellent corrosion resistance in many oxidizing, neutral and mildly reducing environments, including seawater, chlorides and chemical processing media. Grade 1 is lower in strength than other commercially pure titanium grades, but its softness, formability, weldability and light weight make it well suited for thin-gauge components, deep drawn parts and applications requiring reliable corrosion performance.
PRODUCT FORMS
Sheet, Strip, Plate
SPECIFICATIONS
ASTM B265, ASME SB-265, AMS 4902
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
Chemical processing equipment, heat exchangers, condenser plates, desalination and marine components, electrochemical equipment, cathodic protection anodes, medical and laboratory components, architectural panels, lightweight formed parts, gaskets, diaphragms and deep drawn components.
PROCESSING
Titanium Grade 1 is supplied in the annealed condition for sheet, strip and plate applications. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but it can be strengthened by cold work. Annealing is used to restore ductility after cold forming and to relieve forming stresses.
FORMING
Grade 1 provides excellent cold formability and is the preferred commercially pure titanium grade for severe forming operations, including deep drawing, bending, stamping and roll forming. Its low oxygen and iron levels contribute to superior ductility and reduced risk of cracking during forming.
WELDING
Titanium Grade 1 is readily weldable by standard titanium welding processes when proper shielding is used to prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen at elevated temperatures. Weld areas should be protected with inert gas shielding until temperatures are low enough to avoid surface contamination.
CORROSION
Grade 1 titanium forms a stable, self-healing titanium oxide film that provides excellent resistance to seawater, chlorides, oxidizing acids and many industrial chemical environments. It is especially useful where corrosion resistance, light weight and formability are required together.
